Shanon Esau graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Physiotherapy degree from the Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation in 2008. Starting her career working at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba for over a decade. She went on the work at Breast Health Centre as a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. She found her true passion working in the outpatient Lymphedema Clinic at Breast Health Centre in Winnipeg treating patients with Lymphedema and Axillary Web Syndrome due to breast cancer treatment.
Shannon has been involved as a guest lecturer at University of Manitoba Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation for Management of Acute and Chronic Edema and Bariatric Inpatient Care.
Shannon has taken postgraduate courses in Manual therapy, Acupuncture, Lymphedema Certification (Manual Lymphatic Drainage MLD & Complete Decongestive Therapy CDT), Axillary Web Syndrome/Cording, Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, Strength After Breast Cancer and custom garment fitter.
Using her clinical knowledge and hands on treatment in both acute and chronic lymphedema, Shannon is able to manage patients that are going through or have been through breast cancer treatment. Her primary focus is to help patients manage lymphedema in the arm or breast with the use complete decongestive therapy (CDT) which includes manual lymphatic drainage, compressive bandaging, education, self care management/exercise and garment fitting. She also helps patients increase shoulder and arm mobility post radiation therapy and breast cancer surgery such as mastectomy, lumpectomy and reconstruction. She is also able to assess and treat other pain related shoulder/arm restrictions due to axillary web syndrome/cording with specific techniques and exercises. Other, pain, weakness, and movement restrictions due to breast cancer treatment can be addressed through strengthening, posture retaining, and specific scar work related to surgery and radiation. Shannon provides a personalized exercise program and ongoing risk reduction education along with custom garment fitting as needed. When Shannon has free time she is playing tennis, biking or enjoying the beauty of Manitoba with her 3 kids and husband.
